Green Cardamom Quality Grades: 8mm Bold vs 7mm Medium Grading Guide

Green Cardamom / Elaichi (8mm+ Extra Bold)

Indian Green Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), known internationally as the “Queen of Spices”, commands premium market valuation in global spice auctions. Sourced directly from the high-altitude plantations of the Western Ghats in Idukki, Kerala, cardamom grading requires stringent mechanical sieve sorting and moisture calibration.

1. Technical Classification of Cardamom Pods

International buyers primarily transact across three standard mechanical sieve dimensions:

Grade Category Sieve Diameter Bulk Density (g/L) Target Market
Super Bold (AGEB) 8.0mm & above 435 g/L min Luxury Retail, Gulf Gahwa Blends
Extra Bold (AGB) 7.0mm to 7.9mm 415 g/L min Wholesale Repacking, Europe & UK
Bold / Medium (AGS) 6.0mm to 6.9mm 385 g/L min Industrial Extraction & Grinding

2. Essential Oil Preservation & Chlorophyll Retention

Premium grade green pods contain an essential oil concentration between 7.5% and 10.0% v/w, dominated by 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpinyl acetate. To preserve the vibrant natural green chlorophyll color without chemical additives, pods undergo flue-curing inside temperature-controlled dry kilns at 45Β°C to 50Β°C, followed by airtight aluminum foil vacuum sealing.

3. Packaging Standards for Ocean Shipments

Cardamom is an extremely hygroscopic commodity. We package export lots in 5kg nitrogen-flushed multi-layer foil pouches, placed inside rigid master cartons of 25kg (5 x 5kg). Container stuffing includes humidity indicators and desiccant bags to prevent moisture absorption and ensure full essential oil stability during sea transit.
